Formaldehyde is a gas that is used in the manufacture of resins, textiles, and other products. It can be prepared by heating formaldehyde with a strong acid such as hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid. Formaldehyde is also used as an intermediate in the synthesis of many other organic compounds. Formaldehyde has been shown to have cytotoxic activity in vitro against human cancer cells and hek293 cells, but not against normal human cells. Formaldehyde may be alkylated to form 1,1,5,5-tetrafluoro-2,4-pentanedione (TFPD), which has been shown to have potent biological activity against human prostate cancer cells. TFPD also showed anti-inflammatory activities in vivo in humans and mice models. TFPD has a bioavailability of about 20%.
