Descripción

Fluoxetine is an antidepressant drug that belongs to a class of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. It is used for the treatment of depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, bulimia nervosa, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Fluoxetine inhibits the reuptake of serotonin from the synaptic cleft by binding to and blocking the transporter protein, which is responsible for removing serotonin from the synapse. This leads to increased levels of serotonin in the synaptic cleft and an increase in serotonergic neurotransmission. Fluoxetine has been shown to be effective against depression in humans and may also have therapeutic effects on other disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder and bulimia nervosa.
