Ursolic acid is a monocarboxylic acid that is found in plants. It has been shown to have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and neuroprotective properties. Ursolic acid may also be useful for the treatment of systemic diseases such as cancer or diabetes. Ursolic acid binds to response elements in the promoter region of genes, which leads to increased transcription of pro-inflammatory cytokines. The activity of ursolic acid can be modified by the presence of fatty acids or other enzymes. Ursolic acid has been shown to inhibit the constitutive androstane receptor (CAR) pathway, which regulates cellular response pathways that are involved in tumor growth and metastasis. Ursolic acid also inhibits the activity of fatty acid synthase (FAS), an enzyme that plays a role in cancer development.
