Veratrosine is a natural drug that inhibits the growth of fungi. It has been shown to have antifungal effects by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, which is an important component of fungal cell membranes. Veratrosine also has a matrix effect on cancer cells, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the expression of genes related to cell proliferation and cause apoptosis. Veratrosine has significant cytotoxicity in cancer cells and other mammalian cells, but not in bacterial cells. This drug is composed of nitrogen atoms, including a stereogenic center at C-14, which is responsible for its pharmacokinetics. Veratrosine has been found to be effective against multidrug-resistant bacteria and can be used for the treatment of infections caused by those bacteria.
