(R)-VANOL is a polymerase inhibitor that has been shown to inhibit the activity of the RNA-dependent DNA polymerase. It binds to the enzyme's active site and blocks the nucleophilic attack of the carbonyl group on the sugar residue, which prevents the formation of a covalent bond between these two groups. This results in a decrease in the rate of synthesis of DNA, which can lead to cell death.
