(+)-Varitriol is a synthetic molecule that has been shown to have anticancer activity. It is an enantiomer of 2,6-dihydroxybenzoic acid and is chemically related to phenylpropionic acid. (+)-Varitriol exhibits antitumour activity in human cancer cell lines and animal models of carcinoma. The carbonyl group in the compound is responsible for its chemical reactivity and stereoselective properties. It has also been found to inhibit the growth of bacterial cells, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, which may be due to its ability to inhibit protein synthesis.
