3-Vinyl-6,7,8,9-tetrahydro-2-methyl-4H-pyrido[1,2-a]pyrimidin-4-one (RIS) is a neuroleptic drug that belongs to the class of phenothiazine. RIS is used for the treatment of schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. The chemical synthesis process of RIS involves a four step sequence: 1) Nucleophilic substitution of 3,5 dimethoxyphenylacetonitrile with methyl iodide in an inert solvent such as tetrahydrofuran; 2) Protection of the reactive amino group by forming an acetal with ethylene glycol; 3) Alkylation of the acetal with propargyl bromide in the presence of a base such as sodium hydride; 4) Hydrolysis and decarboxylation of the resulting compound.
