Xanthen-9-ylacetic acid is a potential cancer treatment that has been shown to inhibit tumorigenicity in breast cancer cell lines. This drug is a synthetic analog of the natural product xanthone, which has been shown to have chemoprotective properties. Xanthen-9-ylacetic acid inhibits the mitochondrial membrane potential and mitochondrial biogenesis, leading to apoptosis and tumor suppression. It also inhibits the growth of carcinoma cells by inhibiting the proliferation of mitochondria. Xanthen-9-ylacetic acid also exhibits antiangiogenic effects by inhibiting angiogenesis in tumors.
