Zeaxanthin is a carotenoid that belongs to the class of hydrophilic compounds. It is a natural pigment found in some foods such as corn, spinach, and red peppers. Zeaxanthin has been shown to have antioxidant properties and may protect against oxidative DNA damage and other oxidative stress-related diseases. Zeaxanthin has also been shown to be effective in vitro and in vivo studies for preventing age-related macular degeneration (AMD) by blocking blue light from reaching the retina. Zeaxanthin is converted into an active form, retinal, which is then converted into 11-cis-retinal by the enzyme retinal dehydrogenase. This active form reacts with molecules called opsins in the photoreceptor cells of the eye to produce visual images when stimulated by light.
