Ethyl 3-(4-chlorophenyl)acrylate is a cinnamic acid derivative. It is used as a reagent in organic synthesis and was first prepared by the reaction of ethyl diazoacetate with 4-chlorobenzaldehyde. Ethyl 3-(4-chlorophenyl)acrylate has been shown to be effective against Diptera, Culicidae, and mosquitoes. The analytical method for this compound consists of reacting ethyl 3-(4-chlorophenyl)acrylate with ethyl cinnamate in an acidic solution to produce an orange product. This reaction rate can be increased by adding aldehydes or by treating with aryl halides.
