It reacts with phenolic compounds to form a yellow or red solution that can be measured using a colorimetric method. 4-Bromo-2,6-bis-hydroxymethylphenol is fluorescent and will emit light when exposed to electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths between 300 and 400 nanometers.
