HMBA inhibits proton pumps and the synthesis of DNA, RNA, and protein. The proton pump inhibitors are used to treat acid reflux disease, ulcers, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. HMBA has been shown to significantly inhibit tumor growth in animal studies. This drug also has anti-inflammatory effects and may be useful for treating arthritis.
