1,2-Dihydroacenaphthylen-5-ol is an organic acid that is a fatty acid. It has been shown to have mutagenicity in the citric acid assay and the soyabean test, but not in the Salmonella typhimurium assay. Citric acid is metabolized by hydrolysis to formic acid, which is a weak mutagen. Soyabean oil contains linoleic and arachidonic acids, which are essential fatty acids for animals. 1,2-Dihydroacenaphthylen-5-ol has been shown to inhibit microsomal preparations of rat liver and kidney as well as carbon tetrachloride-induced cytotoxicity in rats. This compound may also be synthesized from vitamin A or formylated from vitamin C.
