1-Methoxy-3-(propan-2-yl)benzene is a formylation reagent that reacts with an aromatic ring to produce a 1,2-dienone. It is not catalytic and can be used in the synthesis of anisoles. 1-Methoxy-3-(propan-2-yl)benzene has been shown to inhibit tyrosinase activity and may have therapeutic applications for the treatment of hyperpigmentation disorders such as melasma and postinflammatory hyperpigmentation. This compound has also been shown to have estrogenic activity in cells that express recombinant human estrogen receptors. The binding affinity for 17β-estradiol was found to be similar to estrone, indicating that it may act as an estrogen agonist.
