Octadecanophenone is a colorless, crystalline organic solvent that has a molecular weight of 216. It is used in the production of microcapsules and as a supercritical fluid extraction solvent. Octadecanophenone is also used to produce thermochromic paints because it changes color with temperature. It can be synthesized by reacting benzaldehyde with acetyl chloride and hydrogen chloride gas in the presence of triflic acid as a catalyst. The reaction produces monomers that are reversibly polymerized with other monomers on a substrate to form polymers or resins. Octadecanophenone has been shown to react with fatty acids to form particles that have potential uses in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and food processing.
