It has been found to be an effective antiviral agent against human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV). Hexadecylcyclohexane can also be used as a marker to measure the average particle diameter of emissions. This thermally stable liquid is not toxic to animals and has a low thermal expansion coefficient.
