Echitamine is a cytotoxic agent. It inhibits the growth of cancer cells by interfering with cell-cell interactions, which are required for normal cellular function and reproduction. Echitamine is also known to inhibit the production of malonic acid by isolated heart cells, suggesting that it may be useful as a diagnostic tool in the evaluation of cardiac disease. Echitamine was first identified as an alkaloid from the plant Apocynaceae (formerly Aspidosperma), and has been shown to have cytotoxic activity against liver cells. The skeleton of echitamine consists of a hydroxyl group and a trifluoroacetic acid moiety that are linked together by an amide bond. Structural analysis has revealed that this compound contains a copper chloride ion at its center. The copper chloride ion is coordinated by two oxygen atoms from the trifluoroacetic acid moiety and one hydrogen atom from the hydroxyl group. Ech
