Quinoxaline N-oxide (QNOX) is a genotoxic compound that can be found in urine samples. It is an oxidized form of quinoxaline, a heterocyclic organic compound with the chemical formula C8H6N2O2. The n-oxide group on the molecule makes it more reactive and therefore more genotoxic than quinoxaline. This chemical has been shown to induce DNA strand breaks and mutations in bacteria, as well as in human lymphocytes at concentrations of 10−5 M or higher. QNOX also inhibits cell growth by inhibiting the synthesis of DNA, RNA, and proteins via its effects on polymerase activity.
