6-Methyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-1-benzothiopyran-4-one is a natural product that is produced by the fungus Botrytis cinerea. It is obtained from the fungus by extraction with ethanol and then purified by recrystallization. This compound has been shown to have anti-tumour activity against certain human cancer cell lines, but not against normal cells. 6-Methyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-1-benzothiopyran-4-one has also been shown to be effective in inhibiting the growth of other fungi such as Penicillium digitatum and Aspergillus niger when it is used in dilutions of 1:1000. This compound can be synthesized from glutamic acid and benzophenone in a reaction system containing water and potassium hydroxide under acidic conditions. The reaction time can vary from 2 hours to
