Sodium mesoxalate monohydrate is a compound with a neutral pH and low toxicity. It is used as a binding agent in optical devices, such as light meters and spectrophotometers. Sodium mesoxalate monohydrate can be used to bind c1-c6 alkoxy groups to metal nanoparticles, which are then used for the detection of certain substances. The reaction mechanism involves the reaction of glyceraldehyde with malonic acid or malonate to form an alkylidene malonic ester. This ester undergoes hydrolysis to form an alcohol and carboxylic acid group. The alcohol reacts with gold ions to produce gold nanoparticles that are bound by the carboxylic acid group on the surface of sodium mesoxalate monohydrate. This process is repeated until all of the reactants have been consumed, resulting in gold nanoparticles bound by sodium mesoxalate monohydrate.
