It stimulates soluble guanylate cyclase and causes an increase in the level of intracellular cyclic nucleotides (cGMP) by inhibiting the breakdown of cGMP. Ethyl 3-cyano-2-oxopropanoate has been shown to have antihypertensive effects, as it can reduce blood pressure in hypertensive animals.
