It is used as a research tool to elucidate the role of this receptor in cell biology, pharmacology, and physiology. SKF-38393 binds to the M1 receptor with high affinity and selectivity. SKF-38393 has been shown to activate the M1 receptor by increasing intracellular calcium levels. It also inhibits the binding of acetylcholine to the M2 receptor in vitro. The carboxylic acid group of SKF-38393 can be easily converted into an amide or ester derivative by reacting with ammonia or an acid chloride respectively.
