The binding causes structural changes in the enzyme, which are detected by mass spectrometry. This compound has been shown to be a promiscuous substrate for many aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (ARSs). It is structurally similar to other analogues that have been shown to inhibit ARSs, such as dicyclohexylcarbodiimide. 1-(Bromomethyl)-3-methoxy-5-methylbenzene has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of protein synthesis in cell-free systems and can be used for the quantification of proteins in cell lysates.
