It binds to the bacterial cell wall, preventing the synthesis of a peptidoglycan layer and causing cell death. Penicillin V-d5 is absorbed slowly from the gastrointestinal tract into the bloodstream and can be detected in serum within one hour after ingestion. The drug's activity can be measured using high-throughput analysis by liquid chromatography on samples of muscle tissue. This process measures levels of penicillin V-d5 in a sample as well as the levels of various parameters such as formic acid, which indicate how much time has passed since the drug was taken.
