It has been shown to be effective in the management of chronic pain, as well as in the treatment of heroin withdrawal symptoms. 10-Hydroxymorphine is used to relieve moderate to severe pain and suppress coughs. This drug is a prodrug that is metabolized by the liver into morphine, which has potent analgesic properties. Thebaine, one of the major impurities in 10-hydroxymorphine, can be detected using a spectrometer with an nmr spectrum at 500 MHz. This impurity can be removed by reaction monitoring or by using an excipient such as hydrochloric acid or sodium hydroxide to neutralize it.
