2-Fluoro-3-iodopyrazine is an alkylaryl diazine that can be synthesized by the Suzuki cross-coupling reaction of 2-fluoropyrazine with aryl iodides. This compound can also be synthesized by the cross-coupling of 2,2'-dibromoethanol with 2-iodopyridine in the presence of palladium as catalyst. The liquid crystalline form is obtained from melting point and differential scanning calorimetry measurements. Crystals are obtained at temperatures above 120°C and mesomorphic properties are observed below 120°C. Liquid crystallinity is observed between 120°C and 130°C. Synthesis methods include thermal decomposition of potassium pyrazinate or by nitration followed by reduction with zinc powder in sulfuric acid.
