It is used in palladium complexes to form spiroketals. TBTPS has been shown to react with ethyne to form hydroxy groups. It can also be used as a kinetic marker for nucleophilic attack on Pd(II). TBTPS is a polymorphic compound that exists in two different forms: yellow and red. The yellow form is more stable than the red form and can be obtained by reacting the red form with sodium salts.
