Scutebarbatine is a labiate-type diterpenoid alkaloid that was first isolated from Scutellaria barbata. It has been shown to have cytotoxic activity against colon cancer and leukemia cells, as well as anticancer activity against epidermoid carcinoma, colorectal carcinoma, and hepatoma cells. However, the mechanism of action is not clear. On the other hand, it has also been shown to have skin cancer prevention effects. This compound also inhibits cell growth in human hepatoma cells in vitro and in vivo by arresting the cell cycle at G2/M phase.
