2-Hydroxy-4-nitrobenzoic acid is a high quality and versatile building block for the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and other chemicals. It is used as a reagent in organic synthesis, as well as a stabilizer for dyes and pigments. The compound has been shown to be an intermediate in the reaction of 2-amino-4-nitrophenol with formaldehyde to produce 2-(2-hydroxyethoxy)ethanol. 2-Hydroxy-4-nitrobenzoic acid can also act as a scaffold molecule in the synthesis of other chemical compounds.
