5(Z),11(Z),14(Z)-Eicosatrienoic acid (5Z,11Z,14Z-ETA) is a fatty acid that belongs to the n-3 series and has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. It is produced by the human body through the action of 5-lipoxygenase on arachidonic acid. 5Z,11Z,14Z-ETA is found in human serum and can be used as an indicator of inflammation. This compound also inhibits cancer cell growth in tissue culture and has been shown to reduce angiogenesis in rat primary hepatocytes. 5Z,11Z,14Z-ETA has a number of effects on autoimmune diseases and reduces the severity of symptoms in Sprague-Dawley rats with experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). This fatty acid is also known for its role in plant physiology.
