2-(3-Pentyl)pyridine is a hydroxy-containing nitro compound that is used as a pharmaceutical agent. It has been shown to inhibit the MCL-1 protein, which plays an important role in the regulation of programmed cell death (apoptosis). 2-(3-Pentyl)pyridine can be administered orally and is also effective when applied topically. It has been shown to have anti-tumor activity in experiments with rats.
2-(3-Pentyl)pyridine is synthesized from ethoxycarbonyl and unsaturated ketones by the addition of nitrogen atoms. The synthesis process includes several steps, including hydrolysis of ethoxycarbonyl, dehydration of unsaturated ketones, and addition of nitrogen atoms to form 2-(3-pentyl)pyridine.
