This substance can be produced by alkylation of methyl chloride with dimethyl sulfate. The byproduct hydrogen cyanide is released during this process. Oxidation of 4,6-dimethylpyridine-2-carbonitrile produces dimethyl oxide and dimethyl sulfate. This chemical can also be obtained from ammonolysis of trimethylamine.
