Tricyclopentylphosphine is a colorless liquid that has a relatively low boiling point. It is an aromatic hydrocarbon with a ring-opening reaction, which means it can be used for the synthesis of cyclopentyl compounds. Tricyclopentylphosphine is produced by reacting phosphorus trichloride with cyclopentadiene. The optical properties of this chemical are similar to those of cyclopentadiene and it also reacts with fatty acids to form chelate ligands. Tricyclopentylphosphine is soluble in organic solvents, but insoluble in water. It can be used as a polymerization catalyst and can also be used in metathesis reactions to produce polymers with hydrogenated structures.
