Ammonium aluminum sulfate dodecahydrate (AAS) is a water treatment chemical that is used to remove heavy metals, such as copper and lead, from wastewater. It is an inorganic compound that precipitates out of solution as hydrous aluminum oxide when it reacts with ammonium. This compound can be used to control the pH of acidic wastewater. AAS has also been shown to inhibit locomotor activity in mice, which may be due to its ability to bind fatty acids and hydrochloric acid particles. AAS has been shown to have thermal expansion properties, although it does not possess detergent properties.
