It is used as a catalyst for the synthesis of 4-nonylphenol, which is an important precursor for the production of polymers, resins, and synthetic fibers. 4-Nonylphenyl acetate can be synthesized by the reaction of phenols and anhydride in the presence of a catalyst such as copper chloride or zinc chloride. This reaction can be carried out in either organic solvents or water. The yields are increased when microwave irradiation is used instead of conventional heating methods.
