Benzoic acid, 4-hydroxy-2-methyl-, ethyl ester is a colorless liquid with an unpleasant odor. It is used in the manufacture of dyes, pharmaceuticals, and other organic compounds. Benzoic acid, 4-hydroxy-2-methyl-, ethyl ester can be synthesized by reacting 4-hydroxybenzoic acid with ethyl chloroformate in the presence of a base such as pyridine. The synthesis yields the desired product in high yield (90%).
