WAY 170523 binds to the active site of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and prevents them from cleaving the peptide bond between two amino acid residues. This drug has been shown to be effective in the prevention of cancer metastasis in mice. The biological studies on primary cells have shown that WAY 170523 inhibits cell proliferation and reduces levels of inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6 and TNF-α.
