Azoramide is a natural compound that has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells. It is a homologous protein that binds to fatty acid and inhibits protein synthesis by disrupting the mitochondrial membrane potential. Azoramide also induces apoptosis via mitochondrial pathways, which may be due to its ability to induce mitochondrial chaperones and cause release of cytochrome c. This compound has been shown to have eye-protecting effects, as it prevents retinal damage in an animal model. Azoramide also reduces the rate of histological progression in a mouse model for age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
