These forms can be separated by column chromatography and by gas chromatography, with the (S) form being more polar than the (R) form. The (S) and (R) forms have different spectral properties, such as differing UV-vis absorption maxima and IR spectra. This difference in properties allows for the identification of these stereoisomers.
