Dihydroergotoxine mesylate is a prodrug that is metabolized to the active form, dihydroergotoxine (DHE), which has been shown to be effective in treating heart tissue disorders and metabolic disorders. DHE inhibits the production of polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are important for maintaining healthy levels of cholesterol. It also blocks receptors for nerve growth factor (NGF), leading to neuronal death. The gene encoding NGF is found in neurons and a model system has been developed to study this effect. Symptoms of DHE-induced neuronal death in prostate cancer cells include decreased cell proliferation, increased apoptosis, and increased necrosis.
