Endosulfan is a pesticide that belongs to the class of organochlorine compounds. It has been used extensively in agriculture, forestry, and public health programs for mosquito control. Endosulfan can cause chronic exposure in humans and animals at levels above its threshold limit value (TLV). The compound is lipophilic and readily penetrates human skin. It also accumulates in adipose tissue, which leads to long-term exposure. Endosulfan is metabolized by gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) into endosulfan sulfate, which is excreted in the urine. Endosulfan has been shown to have growth-inhibiting effects on animal cells and can affect the GABA receptors of mammalian brain cells. Linear regression analysis has shown a correlation between endosulfan levels in maternal serum and weight in children born to women with high exposure to endosulfan during pregnancy.
