This drug binds to the CCR5 receptor on the surface of human T cells and prevents the virus from entering. 2-Ethoxy-2-phenylacetonitrile also shows antiviral activity against herpes simplex virus and cytomegalovirus (CMV). The drug also has chemokine activity, which may be important for its anti-inflammatory properties.
