Ethane-1,2-d2 is a colorless gas with a sweet odor. It has been used as an analytical reagent to study hydrogen bonding interactions and the properties of light emission. Ethane-1,2-d2 is an isomer of ethane-1,1,2,2-tetrachloro. The two molecules are structurally similar in that they both contain four chlorine atoms on the central carbon atom. However, the two molecules differ in their relative orientation of the chlorines. In ethane-1,2-d2, all four chlorines are oriented at right angles to each other whereas in ethane-1,1,2,2-tetrachloro the chlorines are oriented parallel to each other. The activation energies for ethane-1,1,2,2-tetrachloro and ethane 1, 2 d 2 have been determined using cavity ringdown spectroscopy.
