Ethyl 2-ethyl-2-methylacetoacetate is an organic compound with the formula CH3COOC2H5. It is a colorless liquid that is soluble in water. It can be synthesized by two methods: the first involves the reaction of ethyl acetate with methyl iodide and triflic acid, and the second with esterification of acetic acid then hydrolysis. The product from this synthesis can also be purified by recrystallization. Ethyl 2-ethyl-2-methylacetoacetate has been used to synthesize esters, which are compounds that have a carboxylic acid group at one end and an alcohol group at the other end. These compounds are used in plastics, textiles, paints, pharmaceuticals, and other industries.
