Militarine is a basic protein that belongs to the group of oxidized proteins. Militarine also enhances apoptosis in cells, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the phosphorylation of Akt and activation of caspase-3. Militarine has been shown to induce mitochondrial membrane potential collapse in rat striata and human HL60 cells.
