(1S)-2-Acetylamino-1-(chloromethyl)ethyl acetate is a chemical compound that is used as an anti-infective medicine. It is synthesized by the ring opening of a pyridine with ethyl acetate and acetic acid, followed by an acylation reaction with triethylamine and acetic anhydride in the presence of aluminium chloride. The yield is high and the product can be recrystallized to give pure (1S)-2-acetylamino-1-(chloromethyl)ethyl acetate. This chemical compound has been industrialised for use in medicine and industry. The ring opening reaction releases two molecules of hydrogen chloride, which can be removed from the synthesis mixture with a Dean-Stark apparatus to yield 2-acetylamino-1-(chloromethyl)ethanol. This product can then be reacted with ethyl chloroformate to produce (1S)-
