(S)-(-)-1,1,2-Triphenyl-1,2-ethanediol is a chiral compound that is used in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals. The allylation of (S)-(-)-1,1,2-triphenyl-1,2-ethanediol with benzaldehyde gives (R)-(+)-benzaldehyde diethyl acetal. This reaction is conducted in an acidic solution and uses hydrogen bonding as a driving force for the reaction. It also has been shown to be useful in preparative chemistry because it can be used as a ligand for magnesium ions. The kinetic form of (S)-(-)-1,1,2-triphenyl-1,2-ethanediol is an acid at pH 7.0 and has a melting point of -41 °C.
