Urease is a protein that catalyses the hydrolysis of urea to form ammonia and carbon dioxide. Urease is an important enzyme in the diagnosis of photosynthetic bacteria, as it is found in these organisms but not in animals or plants. This enzyme has been detected using a mouse monoclonal antibody. The rate constant for urease has been determined to be 0.0019 s-1 at 25 degrees Celsius. Biochemical studies have shown that urease can bind with protein thiols and quinic acid derivatives such as coumarin derivatives. There are antibiotic resistant strains of certain bacteria that produce urease which can be used as a natural compound to create antibiotics with similar activities. A deficiency in urease leads to symptoms such as growth retardation, leaf chlorosis, and reduced photosynthesis rates. Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) activation by bacterial ureases has been demonstrated in vitro and may be involved in host defense
