Methothrin is a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide that is produced by the reaction of bifenthrin with phosphorous trichloride. It has an acute toxicity to rats and rabbits, but is not acutely toxic to birds. Methothrin has been shown to have a stereoisomeric purity of >99%. There are no significant acute toxicities associated with methothrin exposure. This insecticide can be detected using thin layer chromatography (TLC) or gas chromatography (GC). Methothrin is a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide that can be used for agricultural and non-agricultural purposes, such as in the treatment of head lice, fleas, and ticks.
Methothrin has been shown to have electrophysiological effects on insects, which may be due to its inhibition of acetylcholine release from nerve cells.
