N-Methylfurohydroxamic acid (NMA) is a ligand that binds to the active site of the enzyme hydroxymethylbilane synthase, which is involved in the production of folic acid. NMA inhibits this enzyme and prevents the formation of folic acid, leading to cell death by inhibiting protein synthesis. It has been shown to be bactericidal against a number of bacterial strains, including Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, and Bacillus cereus. NMA has also been shown to be effective against antibiotic resistant bacteria such as methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), vancomycin resistant Enterococcus faecalis (VRE), and penicillin resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae (PP).
